RRCC spikers lose opener

If there was any difference between the Rainy River Community College Voyageurs and the Mesabi Range Lady Norse, you would have needed a microscope to see it.
RRCC’s visit to Virginia turned into a tug-of-war between two evenly-matched teams before Mesabi Range prevailed 3-1 in the MCAC regular-season opener for both women’s volleyball squads last Wednesday.
Three of the four sets went to “overtime,” with the Lady Norse winning the first one 29-27 before the Voyageurs, featuring former Muskie Chelsea Kabatay, took a epic second set 31-29.
But the hosts won the next two sets by scores of 25-22 and 26-24 victory to close out the match.
Kabatay had five kills and four digs in her MCAC debut.
The Voyageurs (3-2 overall) next will host the Fond du Lac Thunder (Cloquet) tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the RRCC gym.
Then Saturday, they’re off to Coon Rapids for three exhibition matches against the Dakota County Blue Knights (Rosemount), the Bethel JV Pilots (Mishawka, Ind.), and the host Anoka-Ramsey Golden Rams.
