Work on the new Scott Street sidewalk is about 90 percent complete.
Precision Paving is close to being done installing the paving stones, with any deficiencies (i.e., poor cuts, bad seams, lips, etc.) to be addressed in the coming days, Operations and Facilities manager Travis Rob told town council Monday night.
In response to inquiries from the public, Rob explained the sidewalks have been designed with accessibility standards in mind.
For example, the high contrast between the paving stones on the sidewalk border and lighter-coloured ones comprising the main path make it easy to differentiate where the sidewalk and curb are.
As well, the tactile, steel pads at each corner are so visually-impaired pedestrians can tell with their feet that they’re at an intersection.
At the Rainy Lake Square, meanwhile, about 90 percent of the retaining wall and foundations have been installed and are being backfilled with large boulders, structural soil, and top soil.
The stage foundation is about 25 percent complete, with more form work being erected and concrete being poured this week.
“RML [Contracting] is starting to work backward, away from the street and working their way onto the site, so people are going to see a lot of things happening,” said Rob.
As for road work, Bay City Contractors has moved from Nelson Street and now is focusing on Second Street East from Mowat Avenue to Portage.
The boulevard trees have been removed along the north side of the block, as well as the asphalt road surface and a portion of the curb and gutter, in preparation for the excavation to start.
Temporary water line installation and testing is being completed right now. Once that’s done, excavation of sewer and water lines will begin.
Just as it recently did on Nelson Street, Bay City Contractors will overhaul the block completely, replacing sewer, water, and storm sewer infrastructure before rebuilding the road, curbs and gutters, and sidewalks.
The job is expected to be completed by the last week of September.
The 200 block is closed to motor traffic throughout the job.
