Eighteen new fires confirmed by yesterday afternoon in the Northwest Region, with more reports still being investigated.
These fires were located in the Red Lake, Thunder Bay, Nipigon, Sioux Lookout, and Dryden districts.
Most of these blazes remained small and fire crews were making good progress on them.
A few fires will be monitored as they are located in remote areas and pose no hazard to the public.
Meanwhile, 16 new fires confirmed by day’s end Saturday.
These occurred in the districts of Nipigon, Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, and Thunder Bay and all were lightning-caused.
The forest fire hazard is “moderate” to “high” across the region.
Unsettled weather is expected over the next couple of days, but rainfall will be scattered and light.
This will assist with suppression efforts but only will reduce the fire hazard temporarily.
In related news, more than 140 personnel from the first wave of resources returned to Ontario on Thursday after completing their deployment in British Columbia.
There remains 391 staff supporting the province of B.C. in its fire management efforts.
Ontario also has provided B.C. with firefighting equipment, including 10,000 lengths of fire hose, two structural protection units, and more than 200 pump kits.
