At the rate he was going, Jamie Davis was about to leave two divisions of drivers spending the rest of their summer Saturday nights just worrying about who was going to finish second to him.
But a pair decided this past Saturday was the time to throw a monkey wrench into Davis’ plans.
Brady Caul (Fort Frances) claimed victory in the WISSOTA Modifieds feature race while Don Scholler (International Falls) topped the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds in Borderland Racing Association action at the Emo Speedway.
Davis had swept the two divisions four of the past five weeks, winning five-straight Midwest Mods features in the process.
And the Devlin native who now lives in Fort Frances appeared poised to run circles around the field again after winning his heats in both divisions earlier Saturday.
But the features unfolded with different outcomes this time around, as Davis only managed fourth place in the Midwest Mods and fifth in the Mods.
Despite lacking checkered flags, he still was able to climb up the overall standings in both divisions.
Davis took over the lead in the Midwest Mods with 501 points, nudging past defending champ Cody Ossachuk (Pinewood), who settled for seventh in the feature and now sits in second place at 498.
Jason Williamson (Fort Frances) is in third with 456 after taking third place in the feature.
Davis remains third with 462 points in the Mods, but shaved eight points off his deficit to overall leader and defending champ Brody Strachan of Emo (483) while Matt DePiero of Fort Frances is second (465).
DePiero finished fourth in Saturday’s feature while Strachan was one of two cars not to finish the 11-car Mods’ finale.
Caul outraced Davis’ brother, Jeff (Devlin), to the finish line for his second feature win of the year, with Gavin Paull (Fort Frances) taking third.
The younger Davis also was the runner-up in the Midwest Mods to Scholler, who won his first feature of the year.
In the Street Stocks division, meanwhile, Jake Froemke (International Falls) made it back-to-back feature wins after finishing ahead of Jason Supinski (Fort Frances) and Kevin Desserre (Dryden) on Saturday night.
Desserre took advantage of the Tylar Wilson’s absence to build his division lead from four points to 46 over the Fort Frances driver (387-341).
Froemke is now a fast-closing third (328).
Racing resumes this Saturday with the SMS Equipment Mid-Season Shootout.
Hot laps are at 7 p.m., with the green flag dropping at 7:30 (weather permitting).
