Another top-three finish for Steve Arpin wasn’t enough to prevent him taking a step back in the drivers’ championship race.
The Fort Frances native drove his Loenbro Motorsports car across the finish line in third place in the final of the Red Bull Global Rallycross event in Indianapolis on Sunday.
But Arpin, who has five podium finishes in seven finals this year, dropped one spot in the overall standings to third with 455 points behind the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross tandem of Tanner Foust (488) and Scott Speed (462).
Speed closed the gap on Foust by beating him in the final by just .431 seconds (10:14.09).
Foust was at 10:14.521 while Arpin was 1.453 back of the winner (10:15.).
Arpin won his first heat, then placed third and fourth in the other two, respectively, before coming in last in his semi-final.
Competition will resume with a doubleheader weekend Aug. 12-13 in Atlantic City, N.J.
