The Couchiching Raiders are picking up steam as the days get hotter.
Chris Morrisseau won for the second start in a row and the Raiders crafted a three-game winning streak with a 19-4 trouncing of the Northwest Bay Chieftains in Rainy River District Fastball League action this past Tuesday.
Couchiching (9-4) is fifth overall, but tied for third in points with the third-place Fort Frances Braves (9-1) and the defending champion fourth-place Sight & Sound Wolves (9-3), who both have games in hand on the Raiders.
The Braves got a free pass with a 7-0 forfeit win over the 13th-place Manitou Thunderbirds (1-10), while the Wolves hammered the Sabaskong Cubs 12-1.
Morrisseau (2-1) got the win over Tanner Smith (2-2) as the ninth-place Chieftains (4-7) lost their second in a row.
Murray Armstrong (4-0) of the Wolves bested Kevin Copenace (2-6) of the Cubs in that pitching matchup.
In further action from Tuesday, eighth-place Windey’s Warriors (6-6) powered past the cellar-dwelling Northwest Bay Juniors (0-12) by a 12-4 margin.
Sean Councillor (1-3) nabbed the victory on the hill against Aiden Morrisseau (0-5).
The league-leading Dawson Tigers (12-1) nipped the sixth-place Stratton Eagles 5-4.
Jeff Morrison (11-0) gave up the most runs he has all year in one game, but was still strong enough to keep his perfect record intact.
In the closest game of the night, the seventh-place Sabaskong Lakers (6-5-1) and the 10th-place Rainy River Royals (2-6-1) played to a 14-14 tie.
The Lakers’ Merlin Kelly (2-4-1) and the Royals’ Myron Armstrong (1-1-1) split the decision, while Tony Armstrong slugged two homers for Rainy River.
The second-place Barwick Blue Knights (11-1) were handed a 7-0 forfeit win by the 11th-place Sabaskong Goldeneyes (2-8).
Tonight at 7 p.m., six games will hit the field.
