It took patience, courage, and grit but Steve Arpin finally has that champion’s look about him once again.
The Fort Frances native captured his second career feature race on the Red Bull Global Rallycross circuit Sunday to conclude a two-day, two-event stop in Thompson, Conn.
Arpin and the Loenbro Motorsports No. 00 car were second behind race leader Tanner Foust (Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross), who had claimed the feature win Saturday.
But with just a few laps to go, Foust lost control of his car and wound up in the tire barricade–opening a clear path to the checkered flag for Arpin.
The former Emo Speedway ace finished the race in a time of 7:33.263 to end up 1.968 seconds ahead of runner-up Scott Speed of Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross (7:35.231).
Arpin was fourth in Saturday’s feature in a time of 7:49.548, 12.673 seconds behind Foust (7:36.875).
His results boosted Arpin into third place in the race for the driver championship with 268 points, just one behind Foust (269).
Speed leads the standings (288).
Another doubleheader looms ahead for Arpin, who will have home country advantage for the first time since joining Global Rallycross when the tour hits Ottawa on June 17-18.
