John Dutton’s suspicions were correct and he also got an extra pleasant surprise.
The Muskie track-and-field team coach got word earlier today that Sekina Scheibler’s silver medal-winning throw of 39.64m in the senior boys’ discus event at the NWOSSAA championships in Thunder Bay earlier this week was good enough to qualify for the all-Ontarios on June 1-3 in Belleville.
Scheibler, who won OFSAA gold in Midget boys’ discus back in 2015, had the best non-winning distance out of athletes from NWOSSAA, as well as the NOSSAA and NEOAA regions.
That criteria also earned his brother, Aaron, a second berth at OFSAA in Midget boys’ discus after his 36.75m effort put him behind only Muskie teammate Sean Huziak (37.29).
The younger Scheibler already had stamped his passport to OFSAA after capturing the Midget boys’ shot put with a throw of 12.17m.
But one Muskie that Dutton did not expect to make it was Carson Noga, whose time of 57.64 seconds in the Midget boys’ 400m held up to make him eligible for OFSAA, too.
They will join NWOSSAA gold-medalists Huziak (Midget boys’ discus and javelin) and Grace Petsnick (Midget girls’ high jump), along with Jill Calder (Midget girls’ shot put) at OFSAA.
Calder was sixth in her event at NWOSSAA but got the automatic berth to OFSAA when the five finishers ahead of her all declined to attend for various reasons.
