Town council has endorsed the establishment of a new committee to review the Fort Frances Fire & Rescue Services.
The idea for the new Fire & Rescue Services Steering Committee came up during the 2017 budget process, when council directed that one be established.
The mandate of this committee will be “to review the entire operations and services provided by the Fire & Rescue Services, to ensure that the most cost-effective and sustainable approach to the delivery of services is being utilized,” Fort Frances CAO Doug Brown noted in a written report received by council at Monday night’s meeting.
“Going forward, this committee will be responsible for the preparation of reports outlining recommended operational and/or service adjustments for council’s approval during key stages of the review process” Brown noted.
Some of these recommendations likely will come from the Office of the Fire Marshal, which will be here to conduct a review later this year.
The new committee consists of Mayor Roy Avis, as well as Couns. June Caul and Ken Perry, and support staff including Fire Chief Tyler/CEMC Moffitt and Brown.
Also at Monday night’s meeting, council:
•approved a travel expense claim for Brown ($180.05) for his attendance at the Northern Ontario Municipal Association conference held April 25-28 in Thunder Bay;
•approved per diem and travel expense claims for Coun. Paul Ryan ($642), Coun. Ken Perry ($710), and Mayor Roy Avis ($594.40) for their attendance at the NOMA conference;
•referred a letter from K.J. Bliss, treasurer of the Rainy River Vet Services Committee, re: the Vet Assistance Trust Fund to the Administration & Finance executive committee for its recommendation;
•received notice of the Rainy River Future Development Corp.’s annual general meeting slated for June 20 at the Devlin Hall; and
•directed the clerk to send a letter to both the Municipality of East Ferris and Madawaska Valley to advise them of council’s support of their resolutions re: changes to the provincial Building Code in regard to the way septic systems are inspected and enforced.
