Voodoos suffer semi-final loss

Brett Hahkala got one more shot at playing but the Powassan Voodoos needed one more shot from any of its players to go in the net.
Instead, the NOJHL champion Voodoos fell 2-1 to the OJHL kingpins, the Georgetown Raiders, in the semi-final of the 2017 Dudley Hewitt Cup Central Canadian Junior ‘A’ hockey championship in Trenton on Friday.
Hahkala, a Fort Frances-based forward, was a healthy scratch in Powassan’s 4-2 loss to Georgetown on Thursday in the final round-robin game for both teams.
With the Raiders finishing second and the Voodoos third in the standings, that set up Friday’s rematch.
Georgetown got goals by Jack Jacome and Jordan Crocker 2:01 apart to grab a 2-0 lead just 3:21 into the game.
The Raiders then withstood a furious rally by Powassan in the third period, which saw Dayton Murray score with 2:30 left in regulation time.
But that was a close as the Voodoos would get.
Hahkala ended the tournament with no points and two penalty minutes in three games.
Georgetown advanced to Saturday’s final, where they were edged 2-1 by the defending champion and host Trenton Golden Hawks, who had lost to the Raiders in the OJHL final.
Trenton now heads to Cobourg to take part in the RBC Cup national Junior ‘A’ hockey championship which runs May 13-21.
