Voodoos beat ‘Dogs

Brett Hahkala got a little revenge for his hometown team.
The Fort Frances native didn’t get a point but still was part of a 4-3 win by the Powassan Voodoos (NOJHL) over the SIJHL champion Dryden GM Ice Dogs yesterday at the Dudley Hewitt Cup Central Canadian Jr. ‘A’ Championship.
Dryden ended the Fort Frances Lakers’ three-year dynasty in the SIJHL semi-finals last month with a four-game sweep.
Both teams are at 1-1 after Powassan lost 5-2 to the host Trenton Golden Hawks (OJHL) on Tuesday while Dryden nipped the OJHL champion Georgetown Raiders 5-4 in overtime.
Georgetown won in the fifth round of a shootout to blank Trenton 1-0 last night.
That leaves everything up for grabs entering today’s last round-robin games as the four teams fight for three playoff spots.
Trenton’s regulation win (three points) and shootout loss (one) has them in first place.
Georgetown’s overtime loss (one point), combined with its shootout win (two), has them in second.
Powassan is third due to the Voodoos losing in regulation compared to overtime while Dryden is fourth with two points (overtime win).
The Voodoos faced Georgetown this afternoon while Dryden takes on Trenton tonight.
The second- and third-place finishers will square off in tomorrow’s semi-final, with the winner meeting the first-place squad in Saturday’s final.
