Molly Carlson’s last recognition of her freshman diving season for the Florida State Seminoles was among her best.
The Fort Frances native was one of two individual recipients, along with junior Natalie Pierce from the Seminoles’ women’s swimming and diving team, of a “Golden Nole” Award at a special ceremony April 11 in Tallahassee.
The honour was given to stand-out athletes in all sports at Florida State who go above and beyond to contributing their time to community service in the local area.
Carlson, Pierce, and the rest of their female poolmates also received the Athletic Director’s Cup for Service after averaging the highest amount of community service hours per student-athlete among all Seminole teams.
“With the women winning the whole thing, it just means they really understand the value of giving back as we help these young adults grow,” Florida State head swimming and diving coach Neal Studd said in a press release.
Carlson had a spectacular first season competing in NCAA Division I, being selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Female Diver of the Year–the first Seminoles’ diver to ever earn the award.
The former Thunder Bay resident who now calls Toronto home was named the 2017 ACC Diving Meet MVP after winning the women’s platform event while also earning bronze in the 1m and fourth in the 3m.
Carlson’s next competition likely will see her wearing the Maple Leaf once again as she is a possible entrant in the summer senior nationals in Scarborough from June 2-4.
