J.W. Walker students were recognized for their success with second languages at the Rainy River District School Board’s regular monthly meeting last Tuesday.
French teacher Rhian MacIver and Ojibwe teacher Shirley Andy led student volunteers in a demonstration of the second-language programs for trustees.
MacIver explained French-language education now focuses on a more authentic learning process, as opposed to simpll memorizing words.
She asked the students questions that they answered in French, inserting English words as needed to avoid frustration.
Andy, meanwhile, teaches math and drama through Ojibwe in her classes to give students a better understanding of multiple subjects at once.
The students introduced themselves in Ojibwe and also performed a short skit.
They impressed everyone at the meeting, with Lewis saying they were very brave for volunteering to speak in front of the board.
Also at Tuesday’s meeting, board chair Dianne McCormack reminded everyone that the 2017-18 budget consultation survey is still available.
She noted the board values the input it receives from the community as part of the budget process.
