Northern Ontario’s fate was in its own hands until Nova Scotia rapped its knuckles with a 2×4.
With Fort Frances resident Lisa Penner playing third, the rink skipped by Kenora’s Peggy Taylor was dumped 11-3 in six ends Friday in the final game of the championship pool at the 2017 senior women’s curling championship in Fredericton, N.B.
A win would have forced a tie-breaker with Saskatchewan’s Sherry Anderson to decide the fourth and final semi-final berth.
Instead, Northern Ontario wound up at 3-4 in the championship pool to finish one game short of Anderson (4-3), who went on to win the title with a 7-3 victory over Ontario on Saturday.
Taylor’s rink never got out of the blocks Friday against Nova Scotia, giving up steals of three, one, and two in the first three ends to quickly fall behind 6-0.
Northern Ontario got one back in the fourth, but then gave up a huge five-ender in the fifth to make it 11-1.
A deuce in the sixth wasn’t enough to convince Northern Ontario to continue on, with handshakes coming at that point.
