The Lakehead University Thunderwolves’ women’s rink, featuring skip Hailey Beaudry of Fort Frances and lead Erin Tomalty from Nestor Falls, finds itself in a dogfight for a playoff spot at the 2017 U-Sports/Curling Canada University Curling Championships in Thunder Bay.
The ‘Wolves were in a four-way tie for the fourth and final playoff berth with a 2-3 record after losing both of their games yesterday.
Beaudry’s crew was thumped 11-2 in eight ends by the Laurentian Voyageurs of Sudbury (3-2).
Then the host team fell 8-5 to the University of New Brunswick Reds from Fredericton (2-3).
The ‘Wolves and Reds are even with the Ryerson Rams (Toronto) and Dalhousie Tigers (Halifax), but it is Lakehead U. that faces the toughest schedule heading into today’s final round-robin games.
Beaudry’s crew likely will have to defeat both the St. Francis Xavier X-Women from Antigonish, N.S. (3-2) this afternoon, then top the thus undefeated University of Alberta Pandas (5-0) tonight to have a shot at advancing to the semi-finals, which get underway tomorrow at 7 a.m. (CDT).
The gold- and bronze-medal games are set for noon tomorrow.
