Fort Frances now has two home-grown products playing in Ontario’s premier junior hockey league.
Brett Hahkala recorded his first career OHL goal Sunday in his fifth game for the North Bay Battalion–a 5-4 shootout loss to the Hamilton Bulldogs.
Hahkala tied the game at 1-1 at 10:03 of the first period, deflecting Brady Lyle’s shot from the point off the right post and in.
With the Battalion suffering a rash of recent injuries, the 17-year-old was called up from the OJHL’s Powassan Voodoo on Feb. 23.
Hahkala didn’t have a point in his first four OHL games.
With the Voodoo, the teen was eighth in team scoring this season with 37 points in 45 games.
Four of his 17 goals are game-winners while his 59 penalty minutes ranks third on Powassan.
Cole Tymkin is the other Fort product in the OHL this season.
The 17-year-old currently suits up for the defending Memorial Cup champion London Knights, where he has eight points in 44 games.
He also is fourth on the team with 71 penalty minutes.
