The Emo Misfits welcomed a championship game rematch with the host squad and did the same thing as last year–downing the Chiefs 5-3 in the final of the third-annual Chiefs Invitational Women’s Hockey Tournament on Sunday at “The Duke” (Couchiching Arena).
Emo downed the Chiefs 5-1 in last year’s final and now have beaten the Couchiching-based squad three-straight times in the past two tournaments.
After a scoreless first period, Kailey Curtis beat goalie Shanleigh Fryer early in the second.
Katie Sinclair tied it exactly four minutes later, but the momentum swung back in the Misfits’ favour soon after.
Curtis netted her second goal 1:10 after Sinclair’s equalizer. Then 1:10 after the go-ahead goal, Kenora import Jennifer Craven made it 3-1 for Emo.
In the third, Craven widened the lead with 6:15 to go before Shilo Beck trimmed the Chiefs’ deficit to 4-2 just over a minute later.
Jessie Baker restored the Misfits’ three-goal lead with a back-breaking goal with two minutes left on the clock.
Beck made the score more respectable with her second of the afternoon with 29 seconds to play.
Carly Whalen added three assists for Emo while Katie Stearns earned the win in goal–despite going up against a Chiefs’ team featuring the tournament’s top two point-getters in Jill Langtry and Beck.
In the round-robin game between the teams, the Misfits scored five unanswered goals to emerge with a 5-1 victory.
Langtry’s first-period goal had the Chiefs up 1-0 after the first frame.
But Emo cranked up the offence in the second, with Baker and Shelby Rea bulging the twine exactly two minutes apart to put the Misfits up 2-1 entering the third.
The final stanza belonged to the Misfits, with Jessica Taggart and Baker tallying 2:05 apart to make it 4-1 before Baker completed her hat trick with 56 seconds to go.
Emo opened play by doubling Dryden JAFT 4-2.
Baker, Hannah Firth-Oster, Curtis, and Kelsey Craven had a goal apiece for the Misfits, who then lost 2-0 to the Thunder Bay Warriors.
With a spot in the final on the line, Emo made short work of the Kenora Blades 5-0.
Baker had a pair of markers in that one, with singles going to Curtis, Taggart, and Kelsey Craven.
Stearns posted the shutout.
The Chiefs, meanwhile, downed the Warriors 5-3 in their first game.
Langtry had a natural hat trick while Sinclair and Amber Jourdain added one goal each.
Julie Magill added three assists.
The Blades were dulled 10-2 by the Chiefs, with Langtry pacing the attack with two goals and two assists.
Jourdain and Beck also netted a pair each while Magill, Zoe George, Sinclair, and Syd Jones added singles.
The Chiefs advanced to the final by nipping Dryden 3-2.
Langtry had a pair of goals, while Shae Smith had the decisive goal.
