Two matches down, but their spirits are still up.
The 16th-ranked Muskies put up a good fight early but couldn’t sustain the pressure and lost 2-0 (25-21/25-10) to the sixth-seeded St. Mary’s Crusaders (Hamilton) in their opening match at the OFSAA ‘AA’ girls’ volleyball championship this morning in Belleville.
“We battled back from 12 points to 21 in the first set,” Muskie co-coach Amy Wilson-Hands said of her NorWOSSA and NWOSSAA champs.
“There were lots of nerves but I saw them start to play like we normally do,” she added.
“In the second set, we went back to not moving our feet and not talking.”
Fort High was right back on the court later this morning in its second game in Pool ‘A’ against the tournament’s top seed in the Riverside Rebels of Windsor.
It would be the Rebels prevailiing 2-0 (25-BLANK, 25-16).
Tomorrow, the Muskies face the 20th-ranked Streetsville Tigers (Mississauga) at 7:30 a.m. before wrapping up pool play against the 11th-ranked Lockerby Vikings (Sudbury) at 10:30 a.m. (all times CST).
The top two teams from each pool move on to the championship quarter-finals.
The third- and fourth-place teams in each five-team pool will continue on in the consolation bracket.
Those games begin tomorrow afternoon.
The championship and consolation semi-finals and finals go Wednesday.
