There was no ‘Argue’-ment to be had–Jacob and his schoolmates were the best of the bunch.
The Donald Young School All-Stars, led by overall individual champion Jacob Argue, took home the team title at the inaugural Rainy River District Athletic Association’s Grade 7-8 archery tournament Saturday at Sturgeon Creek School.
DYS shot its way to the top of the charts by putting five archers in the top 10 in the 29-entrant field to wind up with 1,169 points.
The Sturgeon Creek Sturgeons were second (1,099), placing three in the top 10, while the Crossroads Tornadoes took third (1,006).
The Robert Moore Mustangs (919) wound up in fourth place, with the Fort Frances Muskies (J.W. Walker) landing in fifth (867).
Argue showed he was going to be tough to beat right off the hop–nailing two bull’s-eyes in his first round of five arrows to score 47 of a possible 50 points.
He lost the lead briefly to Lane Sargeant (Sturgeon Creek) in the third round as Sargeant struck for rounds of 48 (best of anyone on the day) and 47 to pull in front by two at the end of the eight-metre distance stage.
When the archers were moved back to the 12-metre mark for the final three rounds, Argue reasserted himself with a 38 (second-best in the round) to move back ahead by three.
He then raised his game further with a 41 in Round 5, including his third bull’s-eye of the day, then finished off his pursuers with a 45 that was the best of anyone from the 12-metre distance to close with 261 points.
That was 14 points up on runner-up Brett Schram of Sturgeon Creek (247).
Sophie Carpenter and DYS teammate Cameron Mosbeck tied for third (244), with Carpenter–the highest-finishing female in the competition–getting the nod by virtue of having one bull’s-eye during the day while Mosbeck had none.
Sargeant hung on to take fifth place (241).
Coming from out of the top 10 after the eight-metre rounds to sixth overall was Jocelyn Allan of DYS, who thrived at the 12-metre range with consecutive rounds of 41–nabbing a bull’s-eye both times.
Bradley Teeple of Sturgeon Creek took seventh (231) while Joanna Empey was the lone Crossroads competitor to crack the top 10 by coming in eighth (230).
Another tie saw Cole Kreger of DYS and Paige McFayden from FFHS each compile 228 points.
Kreger wound up winning the tie-breaker with one bull’s-eye compared to none for McFayden, who still made it four females in the top 10.
