The boys from Rainy River District are holding their own so far with the big man on campus.
Skip Dylan Johnston (Thunder Bay), with Mike Badiuk from Devlin at third and Travis Showalter of Nestor Falls at lead, are tied with defending Olympic men’s champion Brad Jacobs (Sault Ste. Marie) with 2-0 records after the first day of the Northern Ontario men’s curling championship in Thunder Bay.
Johnston rallied from a 5-3 deficit after six ends to edge Chris Glibota (Copper Cliff) by a 6-5 margin in his opener–stealing two in the ninth and then holding on in the 10th as Glibota failed to score with the hammer.
Then in his second game, Johnston used a three-ender in the fifth en route to a 7-4 victory over Bryan Burgess (Kakabeka Falls).
Jacobs, meanwhile, made short work of both of his opponents yesterday.
He slammed Ryan Sayer (New Liskeard) 7-2 in eight ends, then stole three in the fifth and one in the sixth to dump Jordan Chandler (Thunder Bay) 7-1 in just six ends.
Today’s action will see Johnston face Chandler this afternoon and Sayer tonight.
Jacobs goes up against Glibota and Burgess.
The event runs through Sunday, with the winner advancing the 2017 Tim Hortons Brier from March 4-12 in St. John’s, N.L.
