On Wednesday, the Dryden GM Ice Dogs were thrilled with word they’ll be hosting next year’s Dudley Hewitt Cup.
The news was less than enjoyable earlier today.
The SIJHL announced the Ice Dogs’ 3-1 win Monday against the visiting Fort Frances Lakers will be forfeited due to Dryden using an ineligible player.
The unnamed player competed in the game after being omitted from the official gamesheet, which violated Hockey Canada rule 2.2 (b).
Dryden was scrambling to fill out its lineup for the game as it was, having four players sitting out with league suspensions following a fracas with the Thunder Bay North Stars on Jan. 28.
The Ice Dogs (32-5-4) also forfeited a game last season due to using more than one 15-year-old affiliate player in their lineup.
Fort Frances (19-16-2-3) officially will be awarded a 1-0 win and gladly will accept the gift as it moves the Lakers into fourth place–one point ahead of the English River Miners (19-18-1-3).
The Lakers face those same Miners tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena at 7:30 p.m..
The home-and-home series then concludes tomorrow night in Red Lake.
