Social to support July 1 fun

With this year being Canada’s 150th birthday, the Fun in the Sun committee is hoping to make this July 1 bigger and better than ever.
But they’ll need the community’s support to help make this happen.
One way the public can help raise funds is by attending the “Sync or Swim” social slated for Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Memorial Sports Centre auditorium.
FITS committee members Cathy Richards and Shelly Manty said the age-of-majority event promises to be a taste of summer fun in late February.
It will feature music, dancing, beach balls, a photo booth, limbo, a door prize, and–last but not least–a lip-syncing contest.
Organizers are asking those who want to compete in the lip-syncing contest to pre-register, as well as let them know which song they’ll be singing.
They should contact Jolene Richert at 276-8473 or via a Facebook message to sign up.
If those interested don’t know what lip-sync battles are all about, they’re urged to watch them on TV and YouTube for an idea of how they work.
Prizes will be awarded for the top individuals, duets, and groups that pre-register.
Tess’ Kitchen, meanwhile, will be preparing and selling food during the event.
Richards and Manty said last year’s inaugural “Sync or Swim” social went well.
“Anyone that was there really enjoyed it,” said Manty.
“We had a lot of people come early and they stayed, which was really unusual,” noted Richards.
“We were hoping for the younger crowd but they never came,” she added, speculating that as the profile of “Fun in the Sun” has declined in recent years, the name might have less or no meaning to a younger generation.
But Manty noted the mostly new group of FITS volunteers, rallied under Cynthia Donald, wants to make Canada Day synonymous with “Fun in the Sun” once again.
Tickets for the social cost $10 in advance, available at the Fine Line Art Gallery or from any FITS committee member, including Manty (274-5407) or Richert (276-8473), and $12 at the door.
Doors open at 8 p.m.
Be sure to check out the “Sync or Swim Social” page on Facebook for updates.
Looking ahead, the FITS committee is welcoming more volunteers and groups to get involved in staging Canada Day activities.
“They should start thinking about it,” Richards urged.
“If organizations want to do an event, come, do it, and that’s all they have to be responsible for,” she explained.
Activities could be anything from paintball to running food booths.
Some ideas already being planned include musical entertainment and having “For the Love of the Lake”–a new group that promotes the joy of water sports–host an event at the Point Park beach, said Richards.
“We just want to have a fun-filled, family day at the Point,” echoed Manty.
“Kids’ games, food, prizes.”
Proceeds from the “Sync or Swim” social will go towards making Canada Day as fun as it can be.
