It was two sets of chipping off rust and three sets of kicking up dust.
The Muskie senior girls’ volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit to earn 3-2 win (19-25, 18-25, 25-8, 25-20, and 15-10) over the host Kenora Broncos yesterday in the squad’s first NorWOSSA action following the holiday break.
With the win, the Muskies (2-1) tightened their hold on second place behind the Dryden Eagles (4-1) and ahead of the Broncos (0-4), who didn’t look like a winless team early on but eventually couldn’t hold back the black-and-gold’s attack.
As for the junior girls, Fort High (2-1) was on cruise control for the first two sets before overcoming a third-set hiccup to down Kenora (0-4) by a count of 3-1 margin (25-7, 25-15, 21-25, and 25-17).
The juniors also sit in second place behind Dryden (4-1).
Both Muskie volleyball squads remained in Kenora today for the “Winter Blast” tournament, which will conclude tomorrow.
In boys’ basketball action, the senior Muskies got themselves into the win column with a 48-35 decision over the host Broncos.
Aaron Bujold led the way with 13 points while Kobi Ward and Austin Brown each had seven for the second-place Muskies (1-2), who led 21-14 at halftime and 36-30 after three quarters.
Andrew Neil and Dylan Andrews had eight apiece for the Broncos (1-3), who blew a chance to move into second place behind the league-leading Eagles (4-1).
But the Muskies could not make it a clean sweep as the juniors fell 58-24 to Kenora.
The first-place Broncos (3-1) built up a 16-1 lead by the end of the first quarter and rolled to victory from there.
Jeffrey Smith-Fredericks (19 points), Matthew Meekis (16) and Spencer Caruso (15) were a triple threat all day for Kenora, scoring 50 of its 58 points.
Garrett Hyatt had five points to lead the last-place Muskies (0-4), with Devon George and Sean Huziak adding three each.
All four teams resume NorWOSSA play with a rare Monday matchup against Dryden at Fort High starting at noon.
