The Dryden Eagles swooped into Fort Frances on Tuesday and the Muskie court teams couldn’t see them fly away soon enough.
It was the visitors’ day to shine as the Eagles captured three of the four matches to kick off the NorWOSSA regular season.
Only the Muskie senior girls’ volleyball team was able to defend home turf—beating the defending 15-time league champion Eagles 3-1 (25-13, 25-17, 23-25, and 25-16).
The junior squad nearly made it a volleyball sweep but were nipped 3-2 by Dryden (25-20, 20-25, 25-22, 17-25, and 17-15).
In boys’ basketball action, the senior Muskies came close but fell 53-52 to the Eagles.
Kobi Ward drained four three-pointers on the way to a team-leading 18 points while Aaron Bujold had 10 and Liam Metke added seven.
Jarett Hicks took over in the fourth quarter for the Eagles, though, scoring 13 of his team’s 17 points in the stanza, including three of his five “threes” that led to a game-high 22 points.
In junior boys’ action, foul troubles plagued the Muskies throughout a 70-45 loss.
Sean Huziak had 10 points to pace the Muskies, who were outscored 20-5 in the second quarter to trail 33-13 at halftime.
Wyatt Richards added nine while Caleb Allen contributed seven.
In related news, last week’s scheduled games between the Muskies and host Kenora Broncos that were postponed due to inclement weather have been rescheduled for Feb. 13.
Meanwhile, both Muskie volleyball teams are on the road tomorrow and Saturday.
The seniors will take part in the Westgate Tigers’ tournament in Thunder Bay while the juniors will play in the Eagles’ home tourney.
All four teams then will wrap up their pre-Christmas schedule this Wednesday (Dec. 21) in Dryden.
