Should it be chocolates, flowers, and a quiet candlelight dinner at a restaurant? Or should I prepare a special romantic dinner for my wife?
Maybe a combination of ideas should be considered.
I don’t often think about Valentine’s Day but every year when Feb. 14 comes around, I can’t help but think how lucky I have been in my life.
My wife makes every day special and although I can’t remember doing anything particularly wonderful for her on Valentine’s Day, I try to make up for it throughout the year.
Guys often seem to get the rap for being a little stingy on emotions and failing to appreciate their wives or girlfriends. We all seem to take for granted the wonderful things our wives do for us and we often fail to let them know how much we need them to look after us.
Poets through the ages have noted the day with hearts and flowers and lovebirds. We seem to traditionally exchange cards and love texts. I particularly remember being surprised by a red rose that was delivered by a florist early one Valentine’s Day.
Sent by my wife, many on the staff were quite surprised to see a guy getting flowers.
Tradition just says that shouldn’t happen but the memory of that red rose remains in my mind.
I, on the other hand, irregularly bring flowers home for my wife. Those fresh-cut stems are always a hit and the little note card saying “Luv Jim” becomes a keepsake.
Valentine’s Day often is associated with a bit of feasting, and today a special meal either at home or away. For the guy who is a little shy about preparing an elegant meal, a candlelight meal away from home makes for a romantic evening.
Opportunities to do that once children are around seem to diminish, but a night out even with your children can be rewarding. Children really enjoy the Valentine’s Day celebration.
One of the ideas tossed about is lighting a fire in the fireplace and then roasting hotdogs with your children. And the after-dinner treat would be roasting marshmallows and making “S’mores.”
My wife organized one year a dinner in front of the fireplace in our home. Over the many courses which lasted throughout the evening, we enjoyed a wonderful candlelit evening.
Valentine’s Day forces us to become a little more romantic. A time to say I love you an extra time. And a time to think of all the great things our loved ones do to make our lives better.
Have a Happy Valentine’s Day!
