The Muskie court teams earned a split of their four matches against the host Dryden Eagles in NorWOSSA action yesterday.
In senior girls’ basketball, Fort High (5-1) moved into sole possession of first place with a 39-27 victory over Dryden (4-2).
Abby Sanders had a game-high 12 points and five steals while Sydney White had eight points and six steals to go along with 24 rebounds.
Sarah Vandermeer had six points, six steals, and 10 rebounds of her own.
And Jyl Westover scored all six of her points in the decisive third quarter when the Muskies outscored Dryden 15-4 to go up 30-15 entering the fourth.
In the surprise of the day, the Muskie junior girls’ basketball team suffered its first league setback after falling 45-36 to the Eagles.
With a win, Fort High (5-1) could have locked down top spot and a bye to the NorWOSSA final Nov. 8 in Dryden.
Instead, the Eagles (3-3) broke down the Muskie defence to register their first win of the season against the defending champs.
Grace Petsnick led the black-and-gold with 15 points while Adyson Wilson-Hands had six.
Sarah Larson, Janissa Judson, and Jamie Spencer each netted four.
On the volleyball court, the Muskie junior boys bounced back from a shoddy first set to beat the Eagles 3-1 (16-25, 25-14, 25-23, and 25-11).
Fort High (2-4) moved into a second-place tie with Dryden (2-4) with the win, which also clinched first place for the Kenora Broncos (5-1) with only two games left in the regular season.
And in senior boys’ action, Dryden (5-1) made Muskie coach Jason Cain’s prediction that the Eagles would be “coming for blood” ring true as they swept the best-of-five match against Fort High (4-2).
The set scores were 25-23, 25-17, and 25-17.
Looking ahead, three of the four Muskie teams will be on the road for tournaments this weekend.
The senior and junior girls head to Thunder Bay while the junior boys return to Dryden.
All four squads resumes NorWOSSA action this Wednesday (Oct. 26) in Kenora.
Then they’ll close out the regular season here against Dryden on Nov. 1.
