An ill wind kicked up yesterday that left numerous young golfers feeling sick to their stomachs.
Among those was Muskie Tyson Morrisseau, who carded a 12-over 84 yesterday to finish in a six-way tie for 76th place after Day 1 of the two-day OFSAA boys’ golf championship at the Saugeen Golf Club in Port Elgin.
“It was a rough one,” a weary-sounding Morrisseau admitted on the line from the host city.
“We’re right by Lake Huron and once that wind got going, it got hard,” added Morrisseau, the two-time NWOSSAA individual silver-medalist and one of the five members of this year’s NorWOSSA boys’ gold-medal winning team.
“When the wind picked up, everybody’s scores rocketed up.”
Morrisseau was pleased with his game off the tee and his mid-range shots, but said he was done in by some difficult greens.
“My putting really let me down,” he remarked.
“The greens were very quick,” he added. “They were sure something else, with lots of curves.”
Morrisseau was in relatively good shape after the front nine, mixing five pars and four bogeys to sit at four-over.
But after parring No. 10, a bogey on the par-five 11th was followed by a double-bogey on the par-four 12th.
Morrisseau then strung together five-straight bogeys before finishing with a par-four on the 18th.
The second round began this morning, with the scores unavailable as of press time.
“[Today] I’m going to try and focus more on the speed of my putts rather than worrying about the line,” Morrisseau noted.
“I’m going to shoot to get into the top 50 again [he was 54th last year] and I’ll be happy with that.
“It was cloudy [yesterday], and it’s supposed to be rain and cold [today], so it’s going to be a lot of work but it’s doable,” he added.
Brendan Dunphy of the Sinclair Celtics (Whitby) held a one-shot lead over two others going into today’s final round after opening with a one-under 71.
