It took a fourth-quarter push to get the Muskie junior girls’ basketball squad over the hump in their previous game against the Kenora Broncos.
This time, Gord McCabe’s crew decided to extinguish any notion of suspense.
Fort High jumped out to a 20-7 lead after one quarter, then coasted to a 43-19 victory Tuesday in Kenora to raise their NorWOSSA-leading record to 3-0.
“Everybody got lots of court time as I was able to rotate players through for the entire game,” said McCabe, who lauded Grade 9 players Simone Payne, Carmen Hebert, and Angie Redford specifically for their performances.
“That is really paying dividends for our Grade 9 players,” he noted.
The Muskies led 27-11 at the half and 31-16 after three quarters.
Grace Petsnick led the way with 14 points while Adyson Wilson-Hands had nine and Sarah Larson eight.
“All of our top players played really well, although they saw a little less court time than
usual,” conceded McCabe, who also cited the rebounding work of Larson, Wilson-Hands, and rookie Taylor Pagee.
Meanwhile, the senior Muskies (2-1) rebounded from their first loss of the season by romping 44-20 over the Broncos.
Top scorers were not available as of press time.
In senior boys’ volleyball action, Fort High (2-1) rallied from a 2-0 deficit for a 3-2 win in their best-of-five match against host Kenora.
The Muskies dropped the first two sets 25-18 and 25-21, then pulled off back-to-back 25-20 victories before prevailing 15-10 in the fifth set.
As for the junior boys, the Muskies (0-3) earned their first set wins of the season but couldn’t finish things off late as the Broncos took a 3-2 decision (19-25, 25-23, 27-25, 22-25, and 15-12).
All four teams were back in action this afternoon against the visiting Dryden Eagles.
In other high school sports action today, the Muskie cross-country running team is in Dryden for the annual “Turkey Trot.”
