Safeway slashes prices

Press Release

Starting today (Sept. 2), customers in Western Canada will save on their purchases of thousands of lower everyday prices up and down the aisles in their local Safeway and Sobeys stores.
This new initiative is the next step in Sobeys Inc.’s mission that launched in 2013 to provide customers with an overall better food experience when they shop through quality, selection, service, and value.
Building on the lower produce and meat prices introduced earlier this year, customers now will see a bolder, more extensive lower-price commitment extended throughout the store and find better everyday prices in key areas such as grocery, dairy, frozen, and health and beauty products.
In addition, customers will continue to find other ways to save, including weekly flyer promotions, AIR MILES deals, and new programs such as “Buy More Save More.”
“Since we launched our better food movement in 2013, Sobeys Inc. has been on a mission to provide an overall better food experience for our customers and to help Canadians eat better, more affordably,” said Scott Chollak, Vice-President, Retail Operations, Sobeys.
“For us, affordability starts with having quality products, a great selection, and more competitive, everyday low prices,” he noted.
“Lowering produce and meat prices earlier this year was an important step in that journey,” Chollak added.
“And by extending that commitment to now dropping prices on thousands of additional items, we will continue to help Canadians make better, more affordable food choices.”
The ultimate goal is to help customers save by providing more affordable, consistent everyday pricing on their favourite brands, not just those on promotion.
The price drop commitment extends across thousands of major national brands, as well as Sobeys Inc. private label products.
“Our customers have told us they are looking for quality, selection, service, and value when they shop,” said Dave Rodych, Vice-President, Retail Operations, Safeway.
“We’re helping customers to eat better and save every day by making it easier and more affordable to do their weekly shopping at one store,” he remarked.
“It also comes at an important time of year for many customers as families are planning back-to-school routines and meal plans.”
The price reductions also will take effect in IGA stores, a further commitment to help Canadians in all regions–large and small–eat better, more affordably.
To ensure consumers in Western Canada know about the important and positive changes happening, Safeway and Sobeys have introduced new in-store shelf tags clearly indicating price drops.
The stores also will provide recipe and lunch box ideas, showing families how to shop for—and create—affordable and nutritious meals.
