Another major bass tournament in northwestern Ontario, another top 10 finish for Bill Godin.
The Devlin angler teamed with Leroy Wilson from International Falls to be the top representative of the Rainy River District at the 2016 Kenora Bass International this past weekend, placing seventh with a total weight of 46.92 pounds.
Godin and Wilson shot up the leaderboard after bringing in the biggest bag of the entire three-day tournament with their Day 3 haul of 18.27 on Day 3 on Saturday.
Adam Bachynski and Andrew Beernaert from Keewatin captured the title with 51.57.
Winnipeg Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien (Long Lake, Mn.) and partner Mark Peters (St. Francis, Mn.) wound up 22nd with a total of 44.21 after being third on Day 1, while NHL veteran and Kenora native Mike Richards and teammate Trevor Socholotuk settled in at 43rd spot with a three-day combined catch of 40.61.
Meanwhile, Fort Frances Times columnist and Keewatin resident Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson came away with a 44th-place finish at the FLW Forrest Wood Cup on Wheeler Lake in Huntsville, Ala.
Gustafson followed up his Day 1 effort of 8 lbs., 5 oz. on just four fish after Day 1 on Thursday with only three fish on Day 2 on Friday weighing in at 3 lbs., 2 oz.
His total of 11 lbs., 7 oz. left him well outside the top 20 spot needed to move on to the final two days of competition.
The $300,000 first prize in the sport’s richest event ended up going to John Cox (Debary, Fla.), who led the event wire to wire and finished with a four-day mark of 54 lbs., 13 oz.
