Just one new fire was confirmed in the Northwest Region yesterday.
Thunder Bay Fire #16 was listed as “not under control” at 0.3 hectares in size.
Two new fires were confirmed Saturday—both in Kenora District—but these have since been declared “out.”
There’s currently four active fires in the region, including two in Thunder Bay District, one in Kenora District, and one in Red Lake District.
In related news, fire crews continue to make good progress containing Kenora Fire #18, with the perimeter now roughly 70 percent contained.
At a briefing yesterday, people affected by this fire were advised that evacuation orders for the area around Caddy Lake, Macara Lake, Longpine Lake, Rice Lake, and West Hawk Lake will be lifted, effective at 8 a.m. tomorrow.
Evacuation orders for Nora Lake and Florence Lake remain in effect at this time.
Meanwhile, Red Lake Fire #3, which also straddles the Ontario-Manitoba boundary, remains listed as “not under control.”
The fire has been mapped at 75,000 ha.
Recent rain and snow has limited the fire behaviour but even with the cooler temperatures, there still is potential for active fire.
As such, Type 1 and Type 2 crews have been placed on the fire.
Residents also are reminded that a Restricted Fire Zone remains in effect for most of Northwestern Ontario.
It will be assessed this week.
