Big jeer

Matt Soprovich

Dear editor:
I’d like to extend a big public jeer to Jerome Johnson for last week’s thinly-veiled homophobic rant disguised as a letter to the editor (“Scandalous,” April 27.)
You’ve clearly expressed yourself with the clarity and logic of a YouTube comment section when you try to argue that a boy’s shirt choice may one day somehow magically turn him into a homosexual.
If school boys voluntarily wearing pink shirts for one day of the year is so offensive to you that you feel obligated to publicly denounce the act, under the assumption that it might make them question their sexuality, I believe that this is a prime example as to the rationale for anti-bullying strategies in schools these days.
Let me give you a little story. When I was in university, my go to shirt for heavy-metal shows was nothing other than bright pink.
I’d be in the middle of the mosh pit with it. I’d put my shoulder down, body check and throw guys around all night. In a sea of black clothing, you could imagine that I stood out.
Did it ever lead me to question my sexuality? Of course not. On the contrary, I regularly got complimented for it.
People seemed to like the fact that I was gutsy enough to boldly defy convention. Just like these kids do on Anti-Bullying Day.
I can’t help but wonder, though—if this is what keeps you up at night tormenting your soul, what is it that you do for fun? Watch paint dry? Yell at the moon for giving you dirty looks?
With all due respect, I believe I am not alone when I express the following: go kick rocks there, bud. Go kick the biggest rock.
Sincerely,
Matt Soprovich
