The Fort Frances rink of skip Chris Silver, third Daniel Vandenbrand, second Jason Bazylewski, and lead Davis Jackson bounced back from their first loss by dumping Aaron Soulliere (Thessalon) 9-1 in six ends earlier today to improve to 2-1 at the Bantam boys’ and girls’ provincial championships in Sault Ste. Marie.
Silver busted open a close 2-1 game after four ends with a five-ender in the fifth.
He then stole two in the six to prompt handshakes
Silver currently was in a four-way tie for second place with Jonathon Vellinga (Kakabeka Falls), Felix LaSalle (Timmins), and Nicholas Lemieux (Sault Ste. Marie) going into action this afternoon.
Max Cull (Sudbury) led the pack at 3-0.
The locals used back-to-back three-enders in the sixth and seventh yesterday to spark a 7-1 triumph over Myles Harding (Thunder Bay) in their opening game.
But Silver lost a 10-6 slugfest with Vellinga in his second game.
The Fort rink, which just captured the NWOSSAA boys’ title in Thunder Bay on Tuesday, had two more games today against D.J. Edwards from New Liskeard (1-2) and then LaSalle.
Silver faces Lemieux in his first game tomorrow before wrapping up round-robin play against Cull.
In the girls’ division, skip Anika Beaudry and her Fort Frances rink of third Tory
Beaudry, second Jillian Cousineau, lead Katrina Slomke, and fifth Ashley Payne are finding the provincial road treacherous as they are 0-3 so far.
None of their games have gone the limit so far, with the toughest pill to swallow being an opening 13-6 loss yesterday to Tiana Gaudry (Thunder Bay).
Beaudry bolted out to a 5-0 lead with steals of three in the first and two in the second.
But Gaudry racked up a five-ender in the third to tie the score, then cruised to victory from there.
Up next was Cassidy Romyn of Sioux Lookout, who got slight revenge against Beaudry for taking the NWOSSAA girls crown away from her earlier this week by earning a 6-2 win in seven ends.
Kira Brunton (Sudbury) then stayed tied with Romyn for first place at 3-0 by thumping Beaudry 10-0 in just six ends this morning.
It gets no easier later today when Beaudry faces another unbeaten team in Julia Horton of the Soo before facing winless Jamie Smith of Copper Cliff tonight.
Beaudry finishes round-robin play tomorrow against Bella Crosier (Sudbury) and Rebecca Ramsay (New Liskeard).
The top three teams in each division make the playoffs, with the first-place rinks getting a bye to their respective finals Sunday.
