Couchiching First Nation has elected a new chief.
Brian Perrault defeated incumbent Sara Mainville, Louis “Smokey” Bruyere, and Scott McPherson in yesterday’s band election.
Meanwhile, incumbent councillors David Bruyere, Lucille “Bugsy” Morrisseau, Patrick Morrisseau, and William “Bill” Perrault will be joined on council by newcomer Dean Bruyere.
Brian Perrault also was voted in a councillor, but since he was elected chief as well, a byelection will be held to determine who the sixth councillor will be.
The election featured a total of 28 men and women running for council.
The new council has been elected for a two-year term, which will start March 8.
The current chief and council will meet on an as-required basis until the end of its mandate March 7.
