It’s not like they don’t see each other enough on home ice.
But the hockey gods have a strange sense of humour sometimes.
The Fort Frances Midget ‘A’ #1 and #2 teams took their in-town rivalry on the road over the weekend at the Robin’s Minor Hockey Classic Tournament in Thunder Bay.
Fort #2 beat Fort #1 twice—7-3 in the round robin and then 8-4 in the semi-finals—before going on to capture the Midget ‘A’ division with a 5-1 victory over the Thunder Bay Elks 82s in the final.
“Six games in three days is a lot for anybody,” noted Fort #2 coach Dave Taggart.
Daymond Morrisseau notched two goals in the final while Kenton Bowles, Isaac (Ike) Smith, and Austin Angus added singles.
Carly McKinnon earned the win in goal.
Fort #2 opened with a 2-2 tie against the Westfort Rangers, with Avery King and Kale Bruyere getting the goals.
Then they downed Fort #1 on the strength of two goals each from Bruyere and Angus, with singles going to Morrisseau, Sydney Johnson, and Tanner Angus.
Connor Scholfield tallied twice for Fort #1 while Aiden Morrisseau got the other goal.
Fort #2 then played to a 5-5 draw with the Elks 82s in a preview of the final.
Daymond Morrisseau and captain Josh Calder each lit the lamp twice, with Tanner Angus notching the other one.
Then they wrapped up round-robin play with a 6-1 win over the South End Junior Stars.
Daymond Morrisseau and Austin Angus led the way with two goals each while Bruyere and Calder also scored.
Goal scorers for Fort #2 in the semi-final were unavailable at press time. Fort #1, meanwhile, opened play with a 4-3 loss to Thunder Bay.
Nick Wepruk, Nolan Spuzak, and Baeley Fulford scored for the Fort, who hit nine goalposts and were stymied on two breakaways in the game.
“We counted up probably more than 20 goalposts we hit during the tournament,” said Fort #1 coach Doug deBernardeaux.
After their first loss to Fort #2, Fort #1 bounced back with a 3-3 tie against Westfort.
Tyson Morrisseau, Dougie deBernardeaux, and Chase Copenace each scored for the locals, who then finished round-robin play with a 4-2 victory over South End.
Copenace netted a pair of goals in that one while Scholfield and Aiden Morrisseau also scored.
Both local teams head to Thunder Bay again at month’s end for the Elks 82s’ home tournament.
