When it comes to a list of enjoyable destination getaways, Fort Frances probably is not making it onto the Kenora Broncos’ top 10 anytime soon.
Four more confrontations yesterday at Fort High turned into four more wins for the Muskie court teams, who all improved to 7-0 in NorWOSSA play.
The senior girls’ basketball team waited until the fourth quarter to really get going before pulling away to beat Kenora 49-31 for their 27th-straight league victory.
“We weren’t playing defence or moving our feet like we normally do,” admitted co-coach Dan Bird, whose team only led 33-28 late in the third quarter before going on a 16-0 run to ice the victory.
“Thank God for Claire [Hyatt], Maggie [Jean], Ashley [Croswell], and Amber [Williams] creating turnovers like they did in the fourth quarter,” Bird said.
Hyatt exploded for a career-high 21 points while Williams and Croswell each added eight.
Teale Iverson and Tyra Waite each netted 10 points for the winless Broncos (0-7), who only had six players available due to injuries.
Meanwhile, the Muskie juniors girls opted to forego any late-game suspense in dumping Kenora 47-31.
Fort High jumped out to a 15-4 lead after the first quarter and never were threatened after that by a short-handed Broncos’ team that had only two bench players available compared to nine for the Muskies.
Bryanna Dustin led the way with a game-high 14 points.
Adyson Wilson-Hands dropped in eight while Jyllian Westover netted seven.
In boys’ volleyball action, the senior Muskies had a fight on their hands early with the Broncos (0-7) before prevailing 3-1 (30-28, 22-25, 25-18, and 25-18).
“The first two sets were pretty bad for us,” noted rookie Muskie coach Shana Windigo.
“Our guys were really quiet on the court.
“It took a little while for them to wake up,” she added.
“But once they got into the game, they did a lot better.”
The junior Muskies cruised to a 3-0 sweep over the Broncos (2-5) by set scores of 25-5, 25-19, and 25-7.
The squads will close out the regular season here next Thursday (Nov. 5) against the Dryden Eagles.
Fort High then will host the NorWOSSA championships Nov. 13, with all four Muskie teams having byes to their respective finals.
