The August long weekend was a relatively quiet one for forest fires, with only two new blazes reported in the Northwest Region.
Thunder Bay Fire #40, confirmed Sunday, was started by lightning striking a single white pine tree on Paradise Island on Northern Light Lake, about 100 km west-southwest of Thunder Bay.
It is now “out” at 0.1 hectares in size.
Nipigon Fire #54, confirmed by day’s end Saturday, was a human-caused blaze about two km east southeast of Nakina.
It now is “out” at 0.2 ha in size.
There currently are 22 active fires in the region, including nine in Red Lake District, six in Sioux Lookout District, six in Nipigon District, and one in Kenora District.
The forest fire hazard is forecast to be “low” across most sectors of the region, except for a “moderate” hazard in the southwest sector of Fort Frances and Kenora Districts.
It also is “moderate” in the Thunder Bay and south areas.
