Kristina Bombay belted an RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh to spark the Fort Frances Her-icanes to an 18-17 win over the Northwest Bay Beavers in Rainy River District Women’s Fastball League playoff action last night at VanJura.
The second-ranked ’Canes next will host the two-time defending champion Red Gut Babes (seeded fourth) tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at VanJura.
The Her-icanes nearly paid for letting an 8-0 first-inning lead slip away as the Beavers scored eight runs themselves in a second-inning halted by a 10-minute rain delay.
Meanwhile, Red Gut advanced with a 18-5 rout over the visiting Dawson Diggers as Tracy Morningstar earned the win.
Alicia Anderson was saddled with the loss for the expansion Diggers, who had upset the top-ranked Big Grassy Lynx in their last outing.
Big Grassy will be anxious for a rematch tomorrow at home against the eight-ranked Diggers after ousting the fifth-seeded Fort Frances Mud Dogs with a 4-2 triumph.
Last night’s other elimination match-up saw the seventh-seeded Manitou Blaze send the sixth-ranked Couchiching Lady Raiders packing with a 10-6 win at Couchiching.
Karma Andy outduelled Sydney Jones for the win.
The Blaze next will face the Beavers in Northwest Bay tomorrow in another elimination clash.
