No new fires were reported yesterday in the Northwest Region, but several new starts occurred earlier in the weekend.
Two new fires were confirmed Saturday, including one in Kenora District and one in Red Lake District.
Meanwhile, four new fires were confirmed by the end of the day Friday, including two in Dryden District, one in Sioux Lookout District, and one in Red Lake District.
There are 53 active fires in the region.
Nine of these are listed “under control” while the remaining 44 fires are “being observed.”
Except for one fire in Thunder Bay District, the remaining fires are in the districts of Nipigon (18), Red Lake (11), and Sioux Lookout (23) in the northern sectors of the region.
The forest fire hazard is forecast to be “low” across the entire region today, except for an area of “moderate to high” in the far north of the Sioux Lookout and Nipigon districts.
The MNRF is reminding people that they are responsible for safe outdoor fire management and must follow guidelines set out in the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario including no day burning of brush or grass fires.
Campfires are to be tended at all times and put out before leaving.

In other news, Ontario is supporting firefighting efforts with 219 fire management personnel in Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, Manitoba, and the Yukon.
As well, there are seven aviation personnel in Alberta to provide air attack with two CL-415 heavy waterbombers and one bird dog aircraft.
Ontario also is providing equipment, including fire hose, sprinkler kits, pumps, and chainsaws, to Alberta, B.C., and Saskatchewan.
