The town is calling in trappers to deal with a beaver problem.
Beavers have been destroying trees in the back yard of a King’s Highway property and building a dam inside the main culvert which services the Walmart retention pond and the Biddeson Creek system from the north side of Highway 11/71.
In a report from Operations and Facilities manager Doug Brown, he noted the town’s existing method of dealing with nuisance beavers within the town’s storm sewer system was to have an employee who is registered with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry shoot or live-trap them.
However, the town has no live traps for beavers.
As well, it is difficult to consider shooting nuisance beavers in this situation because they are operating in a built-up area near commercial and residential properties.
The town instead is looking to sign an agreement with the Rainy River District Trappers Council to trap the nuisance beavers at a cost of $100 per animal.
Council will vote on the agreement at its regular meeting tonight.
The committee of the whole will meet first at 5:30 p.m., with the regular council meeting to follow.
