Bay City Contracting is getting ready start work on the stretch of King’s Highway from just east of York Avenue to Wright Avenue.
The town will meet with the contractor Thursday afternoon for a pre-construction meeting, at which time details will be worked out, Operations and Facilities manager Doug Brown said in a report to council last night.
Then town then will hold an open house for area residents at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Civic Centre.
The project will see the roadway reconstructed, as well as upgrades to water, storm, and sanitary sewer systems.
Brown said the first stage of the project will proceed from York Avenue to Webster Avenue.
The other road project slated for this summer is work on Phair Avenue between Third and Fifth Street East.
Bay City Contracting also is doing this job.
In related news, Brown said Tom Veert Contracting has been doing small projects around town since May 4, finishing up a contract from last year.
This work includes the replacement of six fire hydrants and four valves, along with 12 spot repairs.
Meanwhile, work on the town’s new sand/salt storage shed also will get underway very soon.
Brown said Aaron Van Pelt of Van Pelt Construction Inc. was here Thursday to look at the site near the Public Works building.
The foundation will be poured by the second week of June, with the structure to be built by the end of August.
Also at last night’s meeting, council:
•referred a request from D. McKelvie, re: traffic safety at the corner First Street East and Portage Avenue, to the Operations and Facilities executive committee for its recommendation, with input from the Traffic Safety Committee;
•referred a request from Rainy River Vet Services Committee, re: a vet assistance trust fund contribution in the amount of $650, to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation;
•referred a request from La Verendrye General Hospital Auxiliary—to participate in or sponsor the “Rock’n for a Reason” fundraiser on May 22-23—to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation;
•referred a request from the Rainy River District Substance Abuse Prevention Team to proclaim Sept. 12 as “Family Safety Day” to the Operations and Facilities executive committee for its recommendation;
•passed a bylaw to amend the procedural bylaw so that members of council can provide monthly reporting on various boards and committees;
•passed a bylaw to award tender RFP 15-OF-04 for the design/build of storage structure for winter control sand to Van Pelt Construction Inc. (the project will cost the town $446,350, including HST);
•passed a bylaw to establish a percentage by which tax decreases are limited in 2015 to properties in the commercial, industrial, and multi-residential property classes;
•passed a bylaw to renew a private airplane hangar lot lease with Ed Tetu (this is a five-year agreement at a rate of $1.74 per square metre); and
•passed a bylaw re: a funding agreement with the Ministry of Indian Affairs and Northern Development to deliver host evacuation services this year should the need arise.
