On the bright side, upcoming upgrades at the recycling depot on Sixth Street West should alleviate the disgusting and unsightly mess that routinely accumulates there, particularly over the weekend.
The downside, unfortunately, is that you can’t fix stupid.
Signs clearly state what can and cannot be recycled yet people either can’t read or, worse, just don’t care. What happened to community pride—not to mention concerns about the environment we’re leaving to our kids and grandchildren?
From a taxpayer’s point of view, it’s vexing to see scarce town funds being wasted on those few who think it’s okay to use the recycling depot as their personal dump.
The new compacting bins being installed at the depot will hold more recyclable material and can be activated remotely to crush it down when it gets full.
That should help stem the overflow problem. What it won’t prevent, however, is people using it to get rid of their recyclables because they can’t bother waiting for their biweekly curbside pick-up day.
Sadly, it also won’t stop those dolts who can’t grasp the difference between an empty tin can and a mattress.
Perhaps the town will need to use the video system also being installed at the depot to act as a deterrent—and hopefully even prosecute offenders.
Better yet, people simply can use their heads when it comes to recycling.
