Part of Frog Creek Road on Couchiching remains blocked off following an incident involving two vehicles early this morning.
“Two vehicles are submerged in Frog Creek,” said Couchiching fire chief and band councillor Christine Jourdain.
“We would like the public to not be coming through at this time,” she noted.
“All access to Frog Creek is at a standstill until we get notice that the vehicles have been removed from Frog Creek.”
Jourdain said two people involved in the incident were out of the vehicles and deemed safe at this time.
“[But] we don’t know if anyone else was in the vehicles and we don’t have any confirmation of that,” she stressed.
The OPP and Treaty #3 Police were on scene, as well as the Couchiching Fire Department.
Jourdain said the OPP dive team from Orillia was expected to arrive later this afternoon.
She noted the OPP has jurisdiction in the matter due to Frog Creek coming under Transport Canada’s Navigation Protection Act.
An update from Jourdain was expected at 4 p.m. today.
In the meantime, Frog Creek was closed to boat traffic, a Treaty #3 Police spokesman said.
The incident also forced the closure of Heron Landing Golf Course for the day.
The course plans to re-open tomorrow (July 4), general manager Brian Johnstone said in a statement.
“We ask that all persons please respect the tragedy that has occurred and be patient while local law enforcement investigate the situation,” he added.
Johnstone added Heron Landing members can contact him directly at 275-7917 for information regarding golfing today at another venue.
