Four new fires were reported in the Northwest Region by yesterday afternoon.
Two were in Nipigon District, one was in Red Lake District, and the other was in Sioux Lookout district.
Nipigon Fire #23, located about 60 km west of Webequie in the same general location of Nipigon Fires #16 and #19, is a lightning-caused blaze currently classed as “not under control” at 350 hectares in size.
The fire in Sioux Lookout District, a 30-ha lightning-caused blaze, is listed as “being observed.”
Red Lake Fire #18, located in the McKin Lake area about 50 km northeast of Ear Falls, was an abandoned campfire put out by members of the public.
An investigation is ongoing.
One blaze of note in Red Lake District is Fire #17—a 200-ha lightning-caused fire located about 10 km south-southwest of Deer Lake.
The community is not threatened.
Aerial ignition was planned for the southern boundary of the fire while FireRanger crews will be establishing a fire line on the north flank using air attack support when needed.
The forest fire hazard is forecast to ease to “low” in the north and west sectors of the region with rain on the way, and be “moderate” in the southern sectors.
