No new fires were reported in the Northwest Region by yesterday afternoon.
In related news, smoke is possible in the coming days in the Fort Frances District, including the Atikokan area.
The U.S. Superior National Forest will be conducting prescribed burns to reduce fire risk in the wildland-urban areas as part of a fuels reduction project.
Depending on the wind direction, people may see or smell smoke in the Ely, Mn. areas—and possibly north into the Fort Frances and Atikokan areas.
Smoky conditions may worsen in the late evening and early morning due to what is known as temperature inversions.
People with urgent health concerns relating to smoke should direct their calls to TeleHealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000.
Meanwhile, there currently are nine active fires in the Northwest Region, including three in the far north sectors of Red Lake District and six in the far north of Nipigon District.
The Red Lake fires are reported as “under control” while the Nipigon ones are “being monitored.”
The forest fire hazard in the region is forecast to be “moderate” to “high” across most sectors, with some areas receiving rain, which temporarily will lower the hazard to “low.”
However, the “moderate” to “high” hazard is expected to rise in the coming days.
