NWOSSAA success did not translate to similar accomplishments at the provincial level for the Muskies’ track-and-field contingent yesterday.
The three members of the black-and-gold who saw action on the first day of the OFSAA championships in Toronto were unable to nab a medal or even emerge from the preliminary round of their respective events.
Mitchell Argue had the best local result with a 21st-place showing out of 24 participants in the senior boys’ 400m with a time of 52.39 seconds (only the top eight advance to the final for the running events).
Argue did better his gold-medal winning time of 53.96 at the NWOSSAA meet in Thunder Bay last week by more than 1.5 seconds.
Myles Banfield of the Bill Crothers Secondary School Colts (Markham) had the fastest qualifying time (48.06).
Muskie captain Jenny Hammond, making her second-straight OFSAA appearance, wound up 23rd out of 24 starters in the senior girls’ 400m (1:04.68).
That was barely off her silver-medal winning time of 1:04.63 at NWOSSAA.
Kyra Constantine of the St. Roch Catholic Secondary School Ravens (Brampton) was fastest in the heats (54.94).
And in the junior boys’ discus, Muskie Jason Bazylewski also was 23rd in the field of 24 with a top throw of 32.36m.
That was slightly under his mark of 33.50m, which earned him second place at NWOSSAA.
The gold medal went to Tony Elliott of the Sacred Heart Crusaders (Walkerton), who easily outdistanced the field (56.21m).
Argue was up again this morning in the preliminary heats for the senior boys’ 100m, where he ended up in 20th (11.53).
Norris Spike of the St. Augustine Catholic Secondary School Falcons (Brampton) was the top qualifier (10.67).
Hammond will get another shot at the podium tomorrow morning in the senior girls’ 800m preliminary heats, where she finished 23rd last year at OFSAA.
Meanwhile, it will be an extremely busy Saturday for Muskie Sekina Scheibler, who will compete in all three of his events in the Midget boys’ division.
Scheibler, who won two gold and one silver at NWOSSAA, first will compete in the discus.
Then it’s on to the long jump before concluding his day with the shot put.
