The town is working on a new strategic plan for the next four years—and once again has invited public input to help create it.
The plea seems to be falling on deaf ears, however. As of press time today, just two people were on the agenda for the public meeting being held this coming Monday (June 8) in conjunction with town council’s regular meeting.
With the deadline for submissions—either verbal or written–being tomorrow (June 4) at noon, there isn’t much time left for others to offer their ideas and suggestions.
Strategic plans basically are just a blueprint but that shouldn’t diminish their importance. The last strategic plan, a 32-page document produced in June, 2011 entitled “Realities . . . Challenges . . . Opportunities,” outlined various goals and strategies in areas of economic development, essential services, quality of life, and corporate initiatives.
It covered everything from condo development to an assisted living facility, First Nations’ partnerships to initiatives dealing with the forestry and mining industries, along with doctor recruitment, cemetery expansion, child care services, and property standards.

Perhaps people don’t think they have anything worthwhile to present, or are too shy to do so at a public forum. Or perhaps they think the town won’t heed their input so why bother?
True, not every suggestion, idea, or wish received may be included and pursued. But this is the best opportunity for residents to have a say in the future of our community over the next four years.
Don’t let it mutely pass by.
