So far, so good.
The two district participants in the inaugural provincial women’s curling championship both ended up in the win column as the event kicked off yesterday at the Fort William Curling Club in Thunder Bay.
Tracy Horgan of Sudbury, who has Devlin’s Jenna Enge at second, earned a 7-5 win over Jessica Williams (Fort William) in the opening draw.
Horgan trailed 5-2 after seven ends, but notched a pair in the eighth and then pulled off a crucial steal of three in the ninth.
She then ran Williams out of rocks in the 10th.
Meanwhile, Fort William skip Kendra Lilly, with Tirzah Keffer of Fort Frances playing lead, used a five-ender in the fourth en route to a 7-5 victory over clubmate Liane Fossum in Draw 2.
Both Enge and Keffer were in action in Draw 3 this morning.
Horgan took on Laura Payne (North Bay), who led the standings entering play today after winning both her games yesterday, while Lilly squared off against Williams.
Enge and Keffer then will get to exchange throws in tonight’s draw when Horgan and Lilly face each other.
The final round-robin draw at the five-team event goes tomorrow morning, with Lilly facing Payne and Horgan taking on Fossum.
The top two teams after the round-robin, if no tie-breakers are needed, will battle in the final tomorrow night.
If one tie-breaker is needed, that will happen tomorrow night, with the final moved to Sunday morning.
If two tie-breakers are required, the first will take place tomorrow afternoon and the second tomorrow night.
The final still will go Sunday morning.
The winner advances to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts pre-qualifying tournament Feb. 12-13 in Moose Jaw, where they’ll to face Yukon and the Northwest Territories.
Whoever comes out of that tournament will join the main field for the Scotties, which starts Feb. 14 in Moose Jaw.
