Brad Jacobs may be Sault Ste. Marie’s favourite curling son but Chris Silver plans to make it his town.
The Fort Frances skip and his team of third Reece Jones, second Kurt McGuire, and lead Matthew Nowak begin play at the Best Western Northern Ontario junior curling championships there this weekend after qualifying out of Region 1 in late November.
Silver’s crew will face Zach Warkentin (Thunder Bay) in their first game tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. (all times CST).
Then they’ll face Brendan Acorn (Sudbury) at 6:30 p.m.
On Sunday, Silver will battle Chris Glibota (Sault Ste. Marie) at 8:30 a.m., followed by a 1:30 p.m. clash against defending Northern Ontario junior men’s champ Tanner Horgan (Sudbury).
Silver then will face fellow Region 1 competitor Jaron Hoppe (Sioux Lookout), who tied for first at the regionals with an identical 2-1 mark, at 6:30 p.m.
Fort Frances then finishes the round-robin with two games Monday against a pair of Sudbury brothers in Sam Cull (8:30 a.m.) and Max Cull (1:30 p.m.)
Tie-breakers (if necessary) will take place Monday at 6:30 p.m.
The semi-finals and final are set for Tuesday.
The winner heads to Corner Brook, N.L. for the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors from Jan. 24-Feb. 1.
