January is “Alzheimer Awareness Month” and the Alzheimer Society of Kenora-Rainy River Districts is hosting several events to educate people on the disease.
A trio of awareness presentations are slated for next month, with a special focus on women.
The Alzheimer Society says women are doubly affected by the disease and it wants women to take action, be Alzheimer’s savvy, know the warning signs, and take steps to reduce their risk.
The first presentation will take place Friday, Jan. 9 from 1-3 p.m. at Knox United Church in Emo, followed by a second on Monday, Jan. 12 from 1-3 p.m. at the Fort Frances Library Technology Centre.
The third will take place Wednesday, Jan. 21 from 1-3 p.m. at the Seniors’ Depot in Rainy River.
Meanwhile, the Ontario Telehealth Network Support Group will host guest speaker Trudy McCormick, executive director of the Northwest Community Legal Clinic, on Thursday, Jan. 8 from 1-2:30 p.m. at La Verendrye Hospital here.
McCormick will discuss power of attorney, elder abuse, wills, and finances at the caregiver support group.

January then will close out with a pair of fundraiser dinners.
The always-popular Linda Johnston Memorial Dinner will take place Saturday, Jan. 24 at 5 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion in Rainy River.

Then the annual “Forget Me Not” charitable dinner will be held Saturday, Jan. 31 at La Place Rendez-Vous, with cocktails at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6.
Tickets cost $50 each (a $25 charitable receipt will be issued), which are available at Northwoods Gallery & Gifts, the Rendez-Vous, Dev-Lynne’s in Devlin, and the Emo Inn and Cloverleaf in Emo.
